Method 1 – “Pure” Android
On Android phones without a customization layer (Pixel, Android One, Motorola), the process is straightforward:
- Open Settings and select Networks and Internet.
- Touch Mobile network and then Preferred network type.
- Choose 5G/4G/3G/2G (automatic) to have the device prioritize 5G when available, or 5G only if you want to always force the new network.
- Go back one level and activate Network operator → Select automatically, so that the mobile can seamlessly switch between 5G and 4G depending on the signal.
Pros
Advertisements
- Fewer steps and standard menus.
- Automatic switching prevents interruptions if the 5G signal falters.
Cons
- Not all stock Androids offer the “5G Only” option.
- The exact name may vary slightly depending on the Android version.

Method 2 – Samsung One UI and Xiaomi MIUI
In manufacturer layers, there are shortcuts and extra settings:
Samsung (One UI)
- Swipe down the notification bar and hold Mobile data.
- Access to Network mode and select 5G/LTE/3G/2G.
- If your mobile allows it, enter Advanced settings and active 5G Optimization to better manage battery consumption.
Xiaomi (MIUI)
- Go to Settings → SIM and mobile network → choose the SIM card.
- Press Preferred network type and select 5G/4G/3G/2G.
- Activate the option 5G network priority so that it always looks for 5G coverage first.
- If the menu does not appear, go to Additional settings → Mobile network → Preferred network and repeat the previous step.
Pros
- Quick access from the notification bar.
- Additional settings that help optimize battery and performance.
Cons
- The path varies between One UI and MIUI versions.
- On some models, you must change the region to “Global” for the 5G option to appear.
Method 3 – iOS (iPhone)
On iPhone with iOS 14+ the configuration is very homogeneous:
- Open Settings and select Mobile data.
- Touch Mobile data options, then Voice and data.
- Brand 5G Activated to always use 5G, or 5G Automatic so that the system can switch between 4G and 5G depending on demand. The latest models also offer 5G Light, which reduces consumption while maintaining good speed.
Pros
- Short and consistent menu across all supported iPhones.
- “5G Light” option extends battery life without sacrificing speed entirely.
Cons
- There is no absolute “5G Only” mode, it always toggles if you use automatic.
- Some carriers limit this functionality on basic plans.
